How Invisalign Works

We start with a thorough dental examination that includes X-rays of all your teeth, their roots, and the surrounding bone. It’s important that we see everything in your mouth so that Dr. Carroll can plan out your tooth movements. We’ll also make models of your teeth and study them.

To begin the actual treatment, we take very detailed impressions of your teeth. These impressions, along with copies of your X-rays and notes are sent to the Invisalign® laboratory. The impressions are scanned by a sophisticated computer, and this computer is used to help plan your tooth movements. The computer then manufactures a series of clear aligners that will snap over your teeth.

When we have the aligners back from the lab, we will see you for an appointment and try the first set in. It will feel like it doesn’t quite fit. This is because it is designed to push your teeth into new positions. After wearing it for three to four days, it will now feel like it fits. After two weeks with that set of aligners, you’ll insert the new set and you’ll go through the same adjustment period.

During the time your teeth are straightening, we will schedule monitoring appointments every few weeks to make sure things are going as planned. At times we may need to make some adjustments to your teeth to help create space so that all of your teeth can be perfectly straight.

Indications for Invisalign

Fortunately, Invisalign can straighten misaligned teeth and fix uneven bites! If you’re struggling with common orthodontic issues from overcrowding and spaced-out teeth, then read on to learn how Invisalign can help.

Crowded Teeth

Unfortunately, crowded teeth can negatively impact everything from your confidence and your ability to chew properly to your oral health. The good news is that Invisalign’s clear aligners can incrementally apply pressure to your teeth, guiding them into their properly aligned positions – no metal brackets or wires necessary!

Gaps Between Teeth

If your teeth are spaced-out, then food particles and debris can become lodged in the crevices in your mouth. This can wreak havoc on your oral health, increasing your chances of developing problems like tooth decay and cavities. Fortunately, a custom series of clear aligners can gently move your teeth together, improving the look and health of your smile in the process.

Bite Alignment

If your bite doesn’t come together properly, you may have trouble with your temporomandibular joint as well as difficulty chewing. Luckily, Invisalign can fix bite problems as well!

The Benefits of Invisalign

When compared to traditional braces, Invisalign aligners are:

  • Undetectable – No one will know you’re wearing braces because the clear aligners are virtually invisible.
  • Faster – Invisalign’s movements are designed by the computer, making them so efficient that they will straighten your teeth in about half of the time of traditional braces (six months to a year vs. two or more years).
  • Easy to Clean – Unlike wire brackets that catch food easily and are difficult to clean (causing inflammation of your gums and even white and brown spots on your teeth when you are done), you can remove Invisalign® aligners when you eat, drink, brush and floss.
  • Comfortable – There are no sharp brackets or wires, so no more sore tongue and cheeks.

Understanding the Cost of Invisalign

There are some aspects of clear aligner treatment that are the same across the board (like the see-through, comfortable trays). The cost, however, does vary from patient to patient depending on factors like the severity of the misalignment. If you’d like an accurate estimate of the price, then we encourage you to schedule an appointment with our team so we can learn more about your unique smile! You can also learn more about the cost of Invisalign by reading on.

Factors That Affect the Cost of Invisalign

Before providing you with an estimate of the price, we will take numerous factors into account, including how many aligners are needed, the severity of the misalignment, and if additional accessories are necessary. These will all impact the initial price; however, it’s important to note that it is possible to accrue additional costs. For example, if you lose an aligner or fall off-track with your treatment plan entirely, then you may need to invest more time and money.

Invisalign vs. Smile Direct Club™: Which Costs More?

The upfront cost of Smile Direct Club™ is cheaper. However, it’s important to consider more than that when comparing mail-order aligners to Invisalign. After all, many previous patients who have trusted these alternatives have experienced worsened alignment and even tooth loss (one of the reasons for the current lawsuits). Furthermore, mail-order aligner companies rely on DIY impressions, skip the initial exam, and don’t have support from professional associations like the American Dental Association. On the contrary, professional organizations like these have actively voiced their distaste and warned the public against using them.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Invisalign?

Not always. However, there are some dental plans that include a once-in-a-lifetime orthodontic benefit, which can cover up to 50% of the cost of Invisalign. If you aren’t familiar with the fine print on your plan or are having a hard time understanding your coverage, our knowledgeable team at Sedalia Dental can help. Since we have experience working with many of the nation’s leading providers, including Humana, Principal, Guardian, and Cigna, we can help take the confusion out of utilizing your benefits.

Common Questions About Invisalign:

What are Invisalign® aligners made of?

The aligners are made of a clear medical-grade polymer, or plastic.

How much does it cost?

Costs really vary widely, depending on the complexity of your case. They are close to the cost of traditional braces, maybe a little more, because of the expense of the sophisticated computer technology.

Is Invisalign® right for all patients?

No, while it is effective for a broad range of cases, there are some types of cases for which it doesn’t work well. If your teeth aren’t fully erupted, it doesn’t work well, but if your jaw has finished growing and you have all of your adult teeth fully erupted, this is generally an excellent option. If you want to know if you are a candidate, give us a call and we’ll schedule a complimentary initial consultation for you.

Is this a completely new way to straighten teeth?

The computer technology is new, but the basic concept of straightening teeth with removable appliances has been used by orthodontists for years. The computer technology enables us to create these aligners with greater precision and less work than used to be the case.
