What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Veneers are thin, strong shells that are cemented to the front of your teeth. Just like new siding on a house, they give your teeth a whole new appearance. There are two main types of veneers and we’ll make the best recommendation for you after we’ve evaluated your needs and goals at your consultation. We’ll also discuss the shape, color, and size to make sure they look very natural.
Traditional Porcelain Veneers
Traditional porcelain veneers are very thin, but we still need to make sure they won’t look or feel “bulky.” To do this, we’ll prep your tooth by removing a small amount of surface enamel. One consideration is that this type of veneer is a semi-permanent restoration, so you can’t remove it down the road without having another veneer put on.
Minimal-Prep Veneers
Just like the name implies, minimal-prep veneers require that little to no enamel is removed beforehand because they’re even thinner than traditional. One advantage is that they’re nearly entirely reversible, so if you ever want to remove them, your existing teeth will only be minimally altered.
What Is the Procedure Like?
After one of our talented cosmetic dentists has made sure that porcelain veneers are right for you, the procedure can usually be done in two visits:
- For traditional porcelain veneers, we’ll first numb the area and prep your teeth before taking impressions. For minimal prep veneers, we’ll take impressions right away.
- A dental lab will use the impressions to custom-make your permanent veneers to our color, size, and shape specifications. If prepping your teeth was necessary, we’ll put temporary veneers on them to restore their look and function until your permanent veneers are ready.
- Finally, you’ll come back 1-2 weeks later to have the permanent veneers cemented into place.
The Benefits of Porcelain Veneers
At Sedalia Dental, we often recommend porcelain veneers because they offer so many benefits, including:
- Porcelain is very durable and stain-resistant, so your veneers can last (and look great) for 10-20 years with good oral hygiene and regular checkups.
- Porcelain reflects light more like natural teeth do, giving you very life-like results.
- Since even traditional porcelain veneers are very thin, they conserve more of your tooth structure than other types of restorations.
- They can be used for many different flaws such as minor gaps and crowding, chips, cracks, stains, and more.
Understanding the Cost of Veneers
Veneers are an excellent way to transform numerous aspects of your smile at the same time. However, they aren’t the best option for everyone. To determine whether or not veneers are the ideal cosmetic solution for you, it’s crucial that you understand how much they will cost. By choosing a skilled dentist and investing in high-quality veneers, you can achieve gorgeous results, but they aren’t your sole option. Read on to learn more about cosmetic options so you can decide what’s best for you.
Cost VS Cosmetic Dentistry: What’s Right for Me?
For lots of patients, veneers seem like the ideal option at first. However, it’s a good idea to look at other cosmetic treatments available to see how they would affect your smile. They all have different price points and can help patients achieve different outcomes. Here are some of the most common options:
- Invisalign – If you’re dealing with misalignment, Invisalign is a great way to correct this without the use of metal brackets and wires. This treatment costs several thousands of dollars, but it’s highly effective at straightening teeth.
- Teeth Whitening –Professional teeth whitening is a quick solution for surface discoloration. It’s much more affordable than other cosmetic options, but it doesn’t address any aesthetic flaws other than staining. Results last anywhere from a couple of months to a few years depending on how well you maintain them.
- Veneers – Veneers may not be the cheapest option out there, but they are an easy way to transform numerous aspects of your smile simultaneously. This includes the shape, color, and even minor misalignment.
How to Make Veneers Affordable
In most cases, veneers are not covered by dental insurance because they are considered to be elective. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll be left completely on your own. We have a Family Discount Plan that can help you to save 20% on procedures at our office. We also work with CareCredit – a third-party financing company that can split the cost of your treatment into manageable monthly installments with little to no interest. Veneers FAQs
Our team at Sedalia Dental can’t wait to show you your new smile after veneers have been placed. Of course, the procedure will only be performed once we’ve cleared up any doubts you might have about the process. The FAQs below cover many of the concerns that we often hear during a consultation for porcelain veneers in Groveport. If you have a question of your own that isn’t addressed on this page, call us to let us know.
Will My Veneers Be Permanent?
The veneers themselves are not considered to be permanent. They usually last around one or two decades on average and will have to be traded out for new ones at some point. That said, the process for placing veneers is considered to be permanent. Small amounts of enamel need to be filed away so that the veneers don’t make the teeth look overly large. Since there’s no way for removed enamel to grow back, the affected teeth will always need to be covered by a veneer or a crown in the future.
Can I Drink Coffee with Veneers?
The short answer is yes, you can drink coffee without worrying too much about staining your veneers. Porcelain is a nonporous material. Unlike natural enamel, it does not contain little holes that dark colored foods and beverages can slip through. That means that your veneers won’t stain as easily as your natural teeth do. It’s important to note, however, that there is a difference between stain-resistant and stain-proof. Given enough time, veneers could eventually become discolored as a result of excessive exposure to darkly pigmented foods and beverages. It is therefore in your best interest to only drink coffee in moderation in order to keep your current veneers for as long as possible.
How Many Veneers Do I Need?
As you can probably guess, there’s no one right answer to this question. The idea behind porcelain veneers is to make all of the visible teeth match, so the number of restorations required depends on the type of change being made. If there’s just one tooth that has been cracked or broken, you’ll likely only need one veneer. In the case of more extensive changes, some patients will need 6 to 8 while others could need as many as 10 or 12 – in other words, enough for all of the teeth that are shown whenever you smile.
Do Veneers Give You a Lisp?
While veneers are very thin, they do nevertheless change the thickness of your teeth slightly. Since your tongue won’t be used to accounting for the presence of veneers at first, you may have a lisp when you try pronouncing “s” and “v” sounds. This is a very mild, temporary issue that will go away once your tongue has “relearned” how to move even with veneers. Practicing the pronunciation of certain words by reading aloud can help the process. If a lisp gets particularly bad, we can reduce the thickness of your veneers to make it go away.
