What is a Tooth-Colored Filling?
Traditional fillings are made of a mixture of metals called amalgam, which has a distinctly dark gray color that makes it stand out in any smile. Tooth-colored fillings, on the other hand, are made using a composite resin material, which is a mixture of plastic and glass particles. It comes in a variety of natural shades that can be perfectly matched to any patient’s smile, helping the restoration blend seamlessly into a tooth. Plus, the resin is able to bond directly to the enamel unlike amalgam, meaning we can place smaller fillings and better preserve a tooth’s natural strength.
The Tooth-Colored Filling Procedure
After examining your mouth and determining that yes, you have a tooth that could benefit from a filling, the procedure will start with your dentist removing any decayed/damaged portions of your tooth. They’ll then apply an etching material to it that will help the composite resin form a stronger bond to the enamel. The color-matched resin will be slowly applied to replace any of the tooth that was removed, and then your dentist will mold it to give your tooth a natural shape. After hardening the resin with a curing light and performing one final check, you’re finished! Altogether, the entire procedure only takes about an hour and is virtually painless.
